The reflection in the mirror ain't always pretty

While Amanda Vanstone may say that no single person can be blamed for the Immigration departments (DIMIA) stuff-ups of late, we as the public must certainly hold our government accountable for this (and not simply forget about it come next election). There is a lot of mention about this "culture of intolerance" in DIMIA, and how this to blame for these mistakes. However, let us not forget that the culture of any government department is undoubtedly the product of the pressures placed on it from above (i.e. government policy). DIMIA sackings, and apologies by the government do not go any where near far enough. This culture of intolerance is most certainly a reflection of the same intolerance expressed in government policy (and the rhetoric accompanying it). A culture change in DIMIA is one thing, but what's the point if government policy does not also embrace the same tolerance and compassion being asked of DIMIA.

I agree...how about some compassion and tolerence...we could start with all those poor law abiding saps who paid thousands of dollars to the governemnt to have their visa applications and appeals legally processed having their money refunded, and, where they were unsuccessful, even though the applicants were tertiary trained, healthy, English speakers, perhaps now thier visas could be granted.
If they can't, well now people know what to do...if you want to migrate to Australia don't waste your money on costly, chancy legal processes...get here illegally, lie about who you are and where you are from and Labour, the Democrats/ Greens, Friends of the ABC and like minded will howl and scream until you are granted your visa, and if you are lucky, a nice little government hardship pension or compensation package to go with it.

hmm, yes...

manage to escape from your country where an oppresive military junta / foreign army with helicopter gunships / militias on horseback is running riot, and where your family has been targeted, your house burnt, your sister raped and your culture crushed. somehow walk several hundred kilometres to a border and risk being shot crossing at midnight. spend several years living in a camp on rice and dried fish, without education, sanitation, or a guarantee of saftey despite being in a "protected" area. be forcibly moved whenever it suits international governments, who despite decrying the situation refuse to recognise that the thousands of people affected by it need help, or even a minute on a news bulletin.

finally manage to get to another country that talks big about supporting freedom, democracy and human rights. a country that is a signatory to the UN convention on refugees. and get locked up again.

these bloody queue jumpers.
